Recently, we were called upon to address a critical safety issue at a site in Morganton, NC, where improperly installed bollards had failed, causing significant damage to a building. Here’s a closer look at how we resolved the issue and ensured the site’s safety with our professional installation services.
The site in Morganton had been previously equipped with 4-inch bollards installed by another company. Unfortunately, these bollards were installed at a depth of only 14 inches in the asphalt, which was far from sufficient to provide the necessary stability and protection. As a result, it didn’t take much force to knock these bollards into the building, causing considerable damage.
Upon assessing the damage and identifying the root cause, we devised a plan to replace the ineffective bollards with ones that would offer superior protection and durability.
The first step was to carefully remove the damaged bollards without causing further harm to the surrounding structure. This process required precision and care, as the bollards were deeply embedded in the asphalt. To ensure maximum stability and effectiveness, we chose to install 6-inch bollards at a depth of 42 inches in the ground, with an additional 42 inches exposed above ground. This substantial depth provides the necessary foundation to withstand significant impact.
Each bollard installation involved:
- Excavation: We dug deep enough to accommodate the 42-inch underground portion of the bollard.
- Concrete Reinforcement: Approximately 480 pounds of concrete were poured in and around each bollard. This concrete not only anchors the bollard firmly in place but also enhances its strength and durability.
- High-Visibility Paint: For added safety, we painted each bollard in safety yellow. This color is easily noticeable, helping to prevent accidental collisions and ensuring that the bollards serve as effective barriers.
