When bollards are installed to protect critical equipment, proper installation is just as important as the bollards themselves. Clear-View, Inc. recently completed a bollard replacement project for American Airlines in Charlotte, NC, helping improve protection for an HVAC unit and nearby building at a facility located next to the taxiway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Protecting Critical HVAC Equipment
American Airlines contacted Clear-View after a truck struck two bollards protecting an HVAC unit at its “line shack.” The impact damaged both bollards, requiring them to be removed and replaced.
During the removal process, Clear-View discovered an important issue with the original installation. The existing bollards had been installed only approximately one foot into the ground and had very little concrete support surrounding them.
While the bollards provided a physical barrier, the shallow installation and limited concrete support meant they were not installed to provide the level of protection expected for an area vulnerable to vehicle impact.
A Stronger Bollard Installation
Clear-View replaced the two damaged bollards with new ones and took the opportunity to significantly improve the installation.
The new bollards were installed approximately three feet into the ground and secured with the proper amount of concrete support. This deeper, more substantial installation was designed to provide stronger protection for the HVAC unit as well as the adjacent building.
Rather than simply replacing the damaged bollards using the same installation method, Clear-View addressed the underlying issue and created a more robust protective barrier.
Why Proper Bollard Installation Matters
Bollards are commonly used to protect HVAC equipment, buildings, utility infrastructure and other vulnerable areas from accidental vehicle impacts. However, the effectiveness of a bollard depends on more than the visible steel post.
Installation depth and concrete support are critical components of a properly installed protective bollard system. A bollard that is not adequately anchored may not provide the protection needed when a vehicle impact occurs.
For commercial and industrial facilities, evaluating the condition and installation of existing bollards can help identify potential weaknesses before another impact occurs.
